How I Finally Landed a Book Deal (a Timeline)
When I decided that I wanted to get serious about writing a novel, I had no idea what “getting serious about writing a novel” would actually entail. I didn’t even know how to start writing a novel. Let alone how to navigate the publishing industry (I’m still figuring that one out).
How I Got My Agent
I queried Rachel Beck at Liza Dawson Associates in September of 2021 and went on submission with her in the fall of 2022! SO much can happen in a year. It’s tempting to tie it all up in a neat little bow (just one year later, it all worked out perfectly!), but the truth is, there were so many moments along the way where it felt like nothing was going to happen.

How do you capture the essence of an 85,000-word story in one single page? It’s impossible! But, with the help of fellow writers, a query letter workshop, and lots of research, I was eventually able to draft a letter that I felt good about.
